Friday Favorites

decamillis2-1 copy Somehow this morning I was tumbling down this book arts rabbit hole while drinking my morning coffee. I’m in love with these miniature copper oil paintings embedded in covers. Artist is Joseph DeCamillis.

Recently I’ve found myself obsessed with this salad, though I most often use big store-bought croutons since they are easy to have on hand and I don’t normally have a baguette around for long. Are you really supposed to save some for later? Also, the crunchiness of  the croutons means that by lunchtime, they will still have some toothiness to them, even though they’ve been tossed in dressing hours earlier. This has become a favorite lunch, most definitely a happy desk lunch. This salad is the perfect companion to a hunk of leftover grilled chicken or salmon. No need to heat the protein, it’s perfect cold.

35252736.Oct18004 I love this photo of my mom and sister Kelly circa 1968. Love her fishbone earrings. Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers, step, foster, in spirit, or otherwise. Motherhood isn’t for everyone, and while some struggle at it, others are stellar. So let’s hear it for mothers of every stripe.

Looking forward to a rainy weekend so I can try out a new recipe or two, stamp some silverware pieces, and find a new knitting project to start. I’ve been stuck on the new project front for about two weeks. More on that later.

Inspiration: Stitches as Letterforms

I have been looking for this very book Hand Lettering for Stitchers everywhere to use as inspiration for hand-lettering projects. The book was first published in Sweden in 1966, and it’s been hard to locate in print. I stumbled across a PDF of it on this odd website that showcases digital archives of personal collections and some books.

How cool are these?

Also found on this site was this beautiful Winter Tree Finder. I just the 2 color printing on the cover and inside. Wonderful illustrations, and really…so pretty and sciencey. Yes, sciencey.

Spoonful of Dirt

birdplanter

My sister Kelly gifted me a copy of this book. It has beautiful images of usual and unusual home objects used for planting succulents. Inspired, I managed to find a couple vintage planters that weren’t already holding crochet hooks or glitter pens, to plant me some tiny succulents.

All this made me think of the poor leggy succulent that has recently been put out to pasture in the kitchen instead of enjoying it’s usual place in the sun of the living room. I’ve always wanted to try my hand at propagating succulents and went online looking for helpful hints. I came across a tutorial on this blog by two sisters-in-law,  Needles + Leaves. Check out that the DIY Succulent Crown… so very sweet. I dissected my sad succulent and ended up with a pile of jadeite-hued limbs that I need to let sit and dry out for a few days, not hours. Damn.

I’m hoping to have a  few teeny tiny plants to stick in some soil in a few short days. Wish me patience and luck.
