a poem, some plums and a horse

This Is Just to Say

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox

and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold
by William Carlos Williams

I just love the word plum.

Saturday morning I was outside drinking my morning coffee and noticed my l plum tree was heavy with fruit… later Roscoe came up to me with purple red splooge on his face. Apparently the dogs had found the fallen fruit and were feasting. I went out and picked fruit from the lower branches and placed a tarp on the ground and gently shook the fruit from the higher branches. I’m not sure where I’d seen this done before, maybe it was Lucy and Ethel or Wile E. Coyote . The plums are small and sweet, perhaps a bit small to wrangle into a tart but great to eat. I feel like a farm girl, so proud of my first harvest.

To be filed under "You know you live in the country when…" I almost got hit by a man on a horse this weekend. I was driving away from my friend’s house when this man came tearing through this little alley on a horse he had little to no control of. I stopped my car and watched him continue on.  I hope nothing happened.

Here are some pics of this morning….

Oh, I almost forgot… thank you so much for the books Miss Mona, it took me a few minutes to figure out where they came from. I appreciate them very much.

WORST dog mom ever

I have already managed to not keep my New Year’s resolution to wake up earlier (more often) and walk the dogs before work. I can’t believe I could resist this face this morning….so sad. I’ll excuse myself ‘cuz it’s deadline…but it is unfair. Callie, I promise to get home as early as possible to walk you today…rain or shine, looks like rain.

I plan to start my first adult size sweater this weekend (finally) and sew a cushion cover for my porch swing. I will be testing recipes for work this weekend… migas, granola, blacberry blue corn muffins, and pear rosemary bread. I also need to plant some iris bulbs, even if it’s late. Not a bad way to spend a cold (by Texas standards), rainy, three day weekend.

The longer I live in Texas the more I am ready for Spring to begin the DAY after my birthday. I mean, without the snow…winter can be bleak.

Green Grass and Fried Pies

Big weekend plans. DH and I thought we’d have a little get-together at our home before we make holes in walls, remove the casino royale carpet, and raise the foundation. We spent the weekend doing chores to get the house, well, a little more presentable. We were outside most of yesterday and it was hot as shit, so I got a little cranky. Our fences are smothered with honeysuckle, jasmine and virgina creeper and the front flower beds are awesome. April’s a good time to have a party in Texas before the grass is toasted and blooms spent. I’ve ordered a mess of fried pies and plan on plenty of rootbeer and big red floats (this is a new one to me). Just finishing the baby bolero form “One Skein”. I knit it with Blue Sky dyed organically grown cotton in Lotus….a very hot pink. Keeping an eye peeled for a special skein of yarn for my Secret Pal.
