Plum Luck

but not so much with peaches. My peaches are oozy and hard as rocks. I will have to do some reading about fruit trees and prepare for next years harvest. This morning I was out back knitting, drinking coffee and enjoying some toast with plum jam that my neighbor made from plums from MY TREE! It is a bit more fluorescent and jelly-like than I normally like…but I shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth. What’s on the needles beside the plate? Clapotis being knit up in Noro Silk Garden, color way 203. You can see I have a thing for greens and blues. After many fits and starts I think I am well on my way to knitting this up. I was tying to watch some TV and start this and it requires just enough attention to make that difficult. I am now in the straight section…aaah. I know this pattern is not a tough one, just hard for those of us with attention problems. I’m knitting it scarf size ‘cuz While I love the Silk Garden I am more a fan of the smaller the better with variegated yarns.

Woohoo, my first skein of Socks that Rock™ medium weight in Lagoon. This yarn is so sproingy to the touch…can’t wait to knit up a pair. Now the search for a pattern Gauge: 8 sts per inch on US size 2. … anyone have any pattern ideas? I think Dsc07687_2
this will be the chance to use the vintage DPNs I  received for Christmas, they are all so skinny.

Dsc07693_2Below is where I get my knit on every morning with my first cup of coffee, mosquitoes permitting. There is something so meditative about the quiet, my dogs (picture of my lovely Maisy below), the roving pack of chickens in the front yard, a rooster or two cockle-doodle-dooing and the clickety click of my little sticks. Helluva way to start the day.

Oh tonight on PBS there is a show that’s bound to be cool Craft in America . Have my DVR scheduled to record just in case I have memory loss. Tune in if you’re inclined… if you’re bothering to read this you probably are.Maisy_2

Feeling Lucky?

Is this not the cutest little guy? Well, he no longer resides in our home but did for a week. I alluded to a puppy a couple posts ago and here’s the scoop (no poop). About 4 weeks ago on a Saturday morning DH and I were drinking coffee in bed, reading the paper, cuddling with dogs…the every weekend stuff, when Maisy came running in crying and made me follow her out back. She led me to this little lab mix who was sleeping under our table saw. We’re not sure if he squoze through the fence or someone just dropped him over our fence ( we are kinda known as suckers in our hood) and it’s not important. Well, we temporarily named him Lucky and promptly began a campaign to find him a great home. His poster claimed that he spoke fluent Pig Latin, made a mean Denver Omelet and could fold fitted sheets. Within a week he had a home. A friend’s sister just moved back to Texas with her husband and two children. They were missionaries in South Africa and had to leave a much-loved dog behind when returning the US. When their daughter saw Lucky she said his name  would be "Kaya", which in the language of the people they lived with in South Africa, means "home". I knew it was meant to be. All reports say everyone is happy as can be.
I am so excited… we’re replacing our windows this weekend! I was a little sad at first to think that my lovely original wooden windows would be replaced with some vinyl clad über efficient ones but I do see the practicality in it all. I’ve never really lived in a home that didn’t have "charming" old windows with 50+ years of paint, broken ropes and a 2×4 or dictionary next to each one to prop it open when we wanted some air. So this will be a truly significant change, one I’m going to embrace instead of fight because I still like a bit of "charm" in my life. I guess I’ll get used to windows I can lock, open easily and don’t whistle on a windy day. I will keep a few to use as frames for some cool letterpress pieces.
Ordered some pretty Heather Bailey fabric to make either some pillow cases or a super pretty apron
I did take some shots of my lovely old windows this morning and will post pics of new ones…might not happen right away since I will be traveling to Wisconsin for work first thing Monday.

Maisy Hates Thunder

SmallflowersJust thought I’d sit down and catch up while drinking my morning coffee. Rain again! I am actually thrilled with it, I’ve always loved rain. We live in a small ranch and farm town, so people are wise to not complain about the rain here…sure I’ll hear that when I get to work in Austin this morning.
We’ve had some rudimentary rain barrels (read trash cans) set up since last year, but just set up our first real one a couple weeks ago….come on RAIN!
Shoot, just realized what time it is…gotta scoot to work, I’ll catch up later today. There’s so much to mention…new knitting projects, a puppy, a sign, completed stairs, butterfly gardens…
