Samin Nosrat, Salt fat Acid Heat

Salt Fat Acid Heat

If you are not watching this show, you need to change your plans this weekend and spend some time with Samin Nosrat.  Her warmth and humor make all the recipes in her book feel within reach of the every day cook. Which seems to be her goal. Watch it on Netflix.

Oh, and I am obsessed with the Buttermilk Roast Chicken she makes in the Heat Episode.

Faerie Knitting

This book is the gift for your favorite knitter this season. This book is a collaboration of cousins novelist Alice Hoffman (Practical Magic) and expert knitter Lisa Hoffman. It’s book of fourteen original faerie tales. Knit into the plot of each tale is a magical garment or accessory inspired by the bravery and self-reliance of the tale’s heroine and includes a beautiful knitting pattern. I am currently listening to the Audible version on my commute.  The Audiobook includes a beautifully designed downloadable PDF of all the patterns… which is pretty cool.

WonderBoys-Still14

Wonder Boys

It wouldn’t be November without watching the Wonder Boys. I find this movie charming and funny every time I watch it. And really, I have no idea why I associate it with this time of year, but it always seems to get me in the mood for winter and the holidays without being a holiday movie. Michael Douglas dragging the hem of that pink chenille bathrobe just kills me every time.

Remembrance Day UK  Style

My husband’s aunt Faye lives in Wales and recently sent me a link of these amazing blankets of poppies that drape many churches for Remembrance Day. I believe this church above has a blanket of 4,000 poppies that were hand knit or crocheted by locals… what a massive and brilliant idea inspired by this poem by John McCrae, a doctor and teacher who served in World War I.

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place, and in the sky,
The larks, still bravely singing, fly,
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead; short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe!
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high!
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

John McCrae, 1872 – 1918
